When I had picked up ‘Mango’ brand of rice bag, he said he won’t eat that brand of rice and instead took me to another section of the mall and selected another brand of rice. I took him to Nesto and bought him some oil and some grains. On another occasion, a laborer approached me asking for some help in buying grocery as he pleaded with me that he had not eaten for over three days. When I reached home I tried to verify the identity of the person in the LMRA website but to my shock no such work permit existed! It then dawned upon me that I was duped in day light. By now I got a slight suspicion about their act. Then when I asked for the CPR, he gave me his laminated copy of vaccination certificate. When I asked for the phone number he said his phone is switched off. When I asked for the guarantee, he gave me his old Samsung basic set phone that had died out of battery. I went upstairs to my apartment and got 10 BD and handed over it to the man. “I will deposit my CPR or phone.” He replied with an innocent look on his face. What’s the guarantee that you will return?’ I quipped. The other day while I was relaxing with my child at the entrance of the apartment, two men appeared there and one of them said ‘my car ran out of engine oil, can I borrow some cash from you? I will return it by evening.’ He was politely told to go or the police would be called.Īs he went away, we knew that he was a con artist so we sent him on his way with a “juice jiko vei iko”.Beggars can’t be choosers! But my experience with them has proved this notion wrong. He said, “You got juice, mix it with ice water please.” We usually hear them calling from the gate.Īnd I never invite them into the compound, you never know where their eyes will be going.Īnyway, back to the beggar in Suva, he was given $10 and offered a glass of water. He was told to wait outside and someone went into the room to bring the money, when the person returned, he was sitting on the settee and reading a magazine.Īt Kava Place, beggars know not to enter the compound. Last week he came to my house again and when he saw me, he said, “Oh boso, you still staying here?” And he went away.Īnyway, while we were in Suva a few weeks ago, a well-dressed beggar came to the house we were staying in and asked for $20. One time a chap came home and asked for money, and I gave him a cane knife to weed the garden and he said that if he needed work he would say so. I didn’t need any work done so I just gave him money and he very reluctantly went away saying that he could work for the money I gave him. One elderly chap had his cane knife nicely wrapped up. From time to time we get beggars coming to Kava Place to ask for money.
